UPDATE FROM CHINKU COMMUNITY

Our global partner Hands at Work is deeply committed to mobilizing the body of Christ to care for the most vulnerable, to restore hope and resilience to families - children and grandmothers who often care for them, rebuilding communities’ strength and independence. Westside has been sponsoring a Chinku community through Hands at Work.

Thirteen dedicated local volunteer Care Workers coordinated by Mose support the most vulnerable children in the community of Chinku. The love and care they provide ensure that each child is physically, emotionally and spiritually cared for.

Meet Felix, 1 of 90 children cared for at CHISANGALALO COMMUNITY BASED ORGANISATION (CBO)

Felix* is a four-year-old boy who lives with his mother and two-year- old brother in Chinku. His father left Felix’s mother and moved to another community, where he got remarried. Sadly, he isn’t a part of the boys’ lives. Without a husband, the sole responsibility of providing for the family fell to Felix’s mother. While she tries to find odd jobs in the community, this has proved challenging as they are not always readily available. Without a consistent source of income, providing the basic necessities of food and clothing has been a daily struggle.

Thankfully, there is a group of local Care Workers who understand the Biblical mandate to care for the orphans and widows in their distress. They are committed to sacrificially serving the most vulnerable in their community on a daily basis. When Care Worker Eluby met Felix and his mother, the daily struggles faced were evident by the boy’s malnutrition. Sharing the situation with the other Care Workers, they invited the boys to the Life Centre.

Now Felix and his brother receive food on a daily basis and are part of the under-fives program. Every morning, they come to the Life Centre to receive breakfast, rest, play with their friends, learn about Jesus and receive lunch with the other children in the afternoon. Having these two meals in the day has gone a long way to improving their overall health and well-being. At the Life Centre, Felix loves playing with his friends – in particular, football
