WKC Gardens

It has been an amazing first year for our garden! It has come such a long way and has been such a blessing for our community!

Savanah Stewart who lead the garden project said this to all the gardners:

“I've said it before, and I cannot say it enough - I want to give another HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that has helped with this project this year. Thank you to everyone that has donated their time, money, items, ideas, and to all of you who have been following along and keeping us in your thoughts. This first year was a pilot project to see if a garden would generate interest and involvement.... and you all knocked it out of the park! The outpouring of support has been truly inspirational.

This wasn't just about the food we were able to produce. This was about creating a stronger community within our church, as well as better connecting us to the community around us. We created a space and project that got people meeting, talking, cooperating. and making connections! That's what it's all about!! I am so grateful to have been blessed with this opportunity.

Our little garden also represents our first step toward building a more sustainable future for ourselves and those around us. We are creating ways to make food more accessible and cost effective. The more we can rely on our local food resources, the better.”

We want to say a big thank you to Savanah and all who helped out this year!

The Garden Journey! 👩🏾‍🌾

Construction 🔨

Construction started on May 13 with an incredible group of builders.  They built 4 beds with mulch surrounding.

Watering 💧

We had a three times per day watering schedule with help from the rain as well. We had two barrels with two bigger barrels under near the church to catch rain water.

Sprouts 🌱

We started seeing growth in June!

Growing 🥕🥔🧅

It was so exciting to see the carrots, potatoes, onions and beats grow.

Harvest Day

This past Saturday we finsihed up a successful first year for the WKC garden!

Though it was chilly and rainy we got the harvest done and sent to Rosscarock food pantry and Calgary Food Bank! ! We had so much fun finishing up the garden, and celebrated afterward with some tea, coffee and cake. We harvested over 100lbs of vegetables!!

We also want to acknowledge the harvest took place on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and the territory of all the people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. We thank God for the gift of this land, the blessings it gives and the people we share it with.

What we’ve done with the vegetables.

Food insecurity is when people have physical and economic barriers to access sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. To love our neighbour is to make sure hey have their basic needs met which includes food. We have designated two organizations to receive our harvest to help out with food security.

The Rosscarrock Community Fridge: The Hatch

The Rosscarrock Community Fridge, located by the community hall, is a shared space that provides 24/7 access to free, fresh, and nutritious food for anyone who may need it without judgement. The fridge is a partnership between the Rosscarrock Community Association and a mutual aid group called The Hatch.

Calgary Food Bank

We gave the Calgary Food Bank over 100lbs of vegetables! The Calgary Food Bank gives emergency food and support for families and individuals facing crisis. They are the ciity’s main charitable food hub. They rely solely on the donation.
