Our Partners

Vocation is discovered most intensely in the context of where we find ourselves, right now. There is always a life to be made and a mission to be realized right where we are. Westside believes in living out the Church’s unique calling to love and serve its neighbourhood and city. We express this mission through partnerships with initiatives all across Calgary, reaching into poverty in all its different forms – social, economic, spiritual, through these partnerships to be a major player in reshaping the calculus of poverty in our city.

The Need: A Snapshot

Over 5,000 men and women in Calgary live in a state of constant homelessness, and many thousands more struggle daily under the burden of substance abuse and addiction.

The Response

The Dream Centre is a faith-based recovery organization working for the past 11 years to help men, and more recently women, escape the cycle of homelessness and addiction. Providing a multi-phased process of recovery at an individual level, the Dream Centre walks with their guests through addiction recovery, transitional housing, and long term affordable housing, with the ultimate goal of reconnecting them to their families and seeing them become productive, contributing members of society.

The Need: A Snapshot

Sexual exploitation is one of the most prolific forms of abuse in Canadian society, affecting millions and taking many different forms, from prostitution and exotic dancing to domestic abuse. Those who fall victim to such exploitation often fall into a further cycle of homelessness, drug addiction and crime, as well as bearing the deep and lifelong burden of trauma.

The Response

There are currently very few long-term recovery/transitional homes available in Calgary, and fewer still that are faith-based, offering spiritual care alongside physical and emotional healing. Next Step Ministries is one such ministry. Home to four women and a full time live in volunteer, Next Step Ministries walks women through a program in which they regain their identity, have the opportunity to learn basic life skills, practice living in community and make healthy choices in a safe and supportive environment.

The Need: A Snapshot

Approximately one third of Calgarians are only 3 paychecks away from falling into homelessness. That may seem a startling statistic, but for low-income families living on minimum wage or in unemployment, it is all too clear a reality. House costs and mortgage rates make it often impossible for low-income families to own a home of their own, trapping them in a cycle of poverty that leaves their families vulnerable to unexpected crises or need.

The Response

Habitat for Humanity, an international faith-based organization, builds homes for families struggling in our own city. Families build alongside volunteers from faith communities all across Calgary, and upon completion have a brand new home to call their own, with mortgage subsidized by Habitat themselves to reflect the income of the family.

Westside has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for 12 vulnerable families in Calgary alongside other faith communities, Islamic and Jewish, in the hope that we might find unity across religious and cultural divides through the impact of serving alongside one another.
