Christianity and the Arts by Richelle Wiseman
Thursdays, February 9, 16 and 23

Christianity’s relationship with the arts has run the gamut from celebration to disdain, from the use of art in liturgy to iconoclasm.  How can we think better about the arts, and understand their true value and power?  Is there such a thing as a “Christian” artist, or does it just happen that artists may also be Christian? What role can the arts play in our personal and corporate worship?  Or in helping communicate the gospel to those who have no faith?   Come and discuss these and other questions as we learn how art and faith can enrich each other.
Class 1 — The Nature and Purpose of the Arts
Class 2 — Art and Truth
Class 3 — Art and Worship

About Richelle: A writer and visual artist who has spent many years studying the relationship between the arts and faith. She was one of the founding board members of Brookstone Performing Arts in Toronto, a Christian theatre company, and she was the founding board chair of Calgary’s Corps Bara Dance Theatre. She also helped start the Emmaus Arts Guild for visual artists of faith in Calgary.

Recognizing Faulty Thinking by Robin Sorenson

Thursdays, March 9, 16, 23

Faulty thinking— it happens more than we know.  Often decisions get made or opinions formed based on criteria that we don’t even recognize, let alone examine for soundness.  Social science research has uncovered a number of ways in which the human brain will decide on a course of action so automatically that decisions aren’t really being made in the deliberate way that we’d like to think we’re making them.

Join us for some discussion about how faulty thinking impacts our time and priorities. We’ll look at finding ways we can recognize this and change how we approach some choices we make, both on a personal level as well as within our community of faith.

About Robin: Robin mentors and teaches on the topic of anxiety, with a particular interest in what both science and scripture reveal to us about the workings of our mind and how that impacts our spiritual health.  She is the author of the book Anxiety: A Healing Journey.
